Wheels are very important in a gerbil's life, there are many types of wheels. We have wooden, plastic, mesh, and wire. You don't ever, ever, want to use a mesh or a wire wheel, you see them in pet stores because they are the cheapest to get, but they can actually cause a bacterial infection called bumble foot, it is less common in gerbils than it is in hamsters, but still a possibility. This can cost hundreds of dollars to cure, and it could be hard for one gerbil to be away from the other gerbil for so long, and a possibility to declan. The best wheel out there is a wooden wheel, gerbils do chew a lot, so if you see they really like to chew on wood, you might wanna try a plastic wheel. Both are made with difficult materials to chew, the plastic made with hard plastic, and the wooden would take a while to chew.
