Gerbils have something called incisors, these are teeth that grow out, but to keep them short gerbils and hamsters have to chew on things. This is where chew toys come in. Chew toys are a wonderful enrichment toy for your gerbils. These are usually wooden non-dyed toys that are given to your rodent for them to chew on, and keep their incisors from growing out. Cardboard is also a great alternative for chew toys, because it is safe for them to digest. Anything glass, pine wood, or cedar wood is bad. Obviously a glass tank is okay because there is nowhere for them to chew but if anything has glass in it, it is not safe for you gerbils.

There are many more safety precautions, and unsafe materials you should research when finding a chew toy for you gerbil. If you wanted to build something out of toilet paper tubes that is perfectly safe and you can use non-toxic children glue to put it together. This glue is safe for gerbils to be around and digest. Some people build castles out of cardboard for their gerbils in which they stack a piece of cardboard on top of 2 toilet paper tubes, and then 2 more toilet paper tubes on top of that piece, and keep stacking until they like. I like wooden toys and cardboard because cardboard is easy to get, however wooden toys last longer with my gerbils.
